What is AEO? Answer Engine Optimization explained

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) is the practice of shaping website content so that Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Perplexity quote it directly as the answer to a question. In practice it means organizing pages into questions with short direct answers, and marking them up with structured data.

Classic SEO chases rankings and clicks. AEO chases something different: when a user asks a question, the answer the AI gives includes you. The 5 minutes you spend on this page cover what AEO is, how it differs from SEO, the 6 steps to do it, and how to check your own site in 30 seconds for free.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO gets your page into the list of 10 blue links on a results page. AEO gets your words into the answer itself, the paragraph an AI reads out before any link is shown. One competes on rank, the other competes on being quotable whole, and the writing that wins each is different.

An AI engine does not show 10 links. It typically picks 1 to 3 sources and quotes a single passage from each. Your content must be short, direct and specific, with a concrete number, price or step in the first sentence, or it will not be the passage that gets chosen.

Why is AEO more urgent than SEO in 2026?

AI Overviews and AI Mode now answer many queries right on the results page, so a growing share of users never click through to any website. Ranking first without being quoted still loses traffic in 2026, because the answer the user reads was assembled from 1 to 3 other sites.

The upside: AI engines choose sources by structure and credibility, not by site size or domain age. This is one of the few places in 2026 where a 20-page small business site starts level with a 20,000-page publisher, as long as its answers are clearer and more specific.

Our case studies page documents 2 Taiwanese sites with screenshots from August 2026: a business-card tool named outright by Google's AI Overview as the recommended option, and a used-EV marketplace whose maintenance-cost data was quoted as the answer to a cost question.

How do you do AEO? Six steps

AEO does not mean rewriting your site. It means reshaping the content you already have so AI can read it and quote it whole. Most sites finish a first pass of the 6 steps below within 2 weeks, and a single page can be restructured and re-scanned in 1 afternoon.

  1. List the 10–20 questions customers ask most; map each to a page section or article.
  2. Under each question, give a 40–120 word direct answer first, with concrete numbers, prices and timeframes.
  3. Turn H2/H3 headings into questions covering what, how, why, how much, comparisons and yes/no.
  4. Put steps, comparisons and specs into ordered lists or tables so an AI can lift them whole.
  5. Add FAQPage, HowTo and Article structured data that matches the visible text word for word, with published and modified dates.
  6. Make sure robots.txt allows GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot, and that content exists in the raw HTML without JavaScript.

How much does AEO cost, and how long until it works?

The scan is free: paste a URL into YOAEO and get AEO, GEO and SEO scores in 30 seconds. The full report with every issue's location and fix is NT$490, including one verification re-scan within 7 days.

Timing varies by site. In our ONLYEV case, about one month after adding Q&A structure and concrete data, Google's AI Overview began quoting it and daily clicks grew from 10 to over 50. We make no guarantees on ranking or citations.

Can a small website do AEO?

Yes. AI engines pick content that is clearly structured with concrete answers, not the biggest brand. Neither of the 2 sites in our case studies is a large publisher: 1 is a business-card tool and 1 is a used-car marketplace, both run by small teams.

Small sites also move faster: restructure 1 page into question-and-answer form, add FAQPage and HowTo structured data, and re-scan the same day to see the score change. The paid report includes 1 verification re-scan within 7 days for exactly this before-and-after comparison.

How do you check whether your site's AEO is any good?

The fastest check is to look at your raw HTML the way an AI crawler does and ask 5 questions: are there direct-answer paragraphs, are the headings questions, is FAQPage markup present and consistent, are dates marked up, and can AI crawlers get in at all.

8 of YOAEO's 18 checks are dedicated to AEO, 6 to GEO and 4 to SEO basics. The free tier shows your total score, the 3 dimension scores and an issue overview, plus 1 fully worked sample diagnosis so you can see the tool actually read your page.

  • Direct-answer paragraphs: is there a 40–120 word answer that can be quoted whole?
  • FAQ markup and consistency: does FAQPage match the visible Q&A?
  • Question headings and intent coverage: are H2/H3s questions across several intents?
  • Answer-first placement: does the first answer land within the first three paragraphs?
  • Freshness: do Article and FAQPage carry published and modified dates?

Frequently asked questions

What does AEO stand for?

AEO stands for Answer Engine Optimization: shaping content so answer engines such as Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT quote it directly instead of merely linking to it.

Can AEO, GEO and SEO be done at the same time?

Yes, and they should be. One piece of content, structured well, serves all three: SEO is the foundation, GEO makes AI willing to cite you, AEO makes you the answer.

Does AEO require code changes?

Mostly content and markup: rewrite openings as direct answers, turn headings into questions, add FAQPage and HowTo structured data. The paid report includes copy-paste snippets.

Can you track whether AI quotes you?

Yes. Search your target keywords and check whether the AI Overview names your site, then compare impressions and clicks in Search Console to verify the effect.
